Why we built a running app for India first

A gamified running app made for Indian streets, runners and networks — not a Western app with a rupee price tag. Here is why building for the hardest market first makes a better product for the whole world.

Most fitness apps are built for somewhere else

Open the top running apps and you can feel it — they were designed for clean suburban GPS, dollar pricing, App Store payments, and a runner who trains alone. They work in India the way a left-hand-drive car works in India: technically, but never quite for you.

We built Run on Realms the other way around. India first. Not as a translation or a discounted plan — as the home market that shapes every engineering decision. Here's why that makes a better gamified running app for everyone.

Building for the hardest version of every problem

India is the toughest place to build a GPS territory game. That's the point. Solve it here and the rest of the world is easy mode.

GPS that survives our streets
Flyovers, basement parking, high-rise canyons, monsoon traffic. A Kalman filter plus dead-reckoning keeps your run accurate and your loop closed when the signal drops. If it works in Mumbai, it works in San Francisco fog.
Battery you do not notice
An hour of tracking uses far less battery than typical trackers. We profiled every power path because runners here are not all on flagship phones.
Made for how India connects
WhatsApp-native sharing, UPI and INR pricing via Razorpay, OTP login. The flows match how people actually run, pay and invite friends here.
Privacy under Indian law
Run start and end points coarsened before storage, full DPDP Act 2023 compliance from day one, encrypted servers. Your home address is never exposed — to anyone, including us.

The community is already here

This isn't a market we're hoping to create. It's a wave we're joining. India has tens of millions of regular runners, a marathon in nearly every metro, parkruns that draw hundreds on a Sunday morning, and new squads forming every month across Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar.

What's been missing is the game layer — a way to turn that energy into claimed realms, captured zones, squad leaderboards and city-vs-city pride. The events platforms in India do registrations and race photos well; the global territory apps do the land-grab. Nobody put them together, made for here. We did.

India out, not India only

Building for India first doesn't mean staying small. It means starting from the hardest constraints and earning the right to scale.

The plan is simple and public: win India, grow squads into clubs and clubs into a real events economy, then take the exact same playbook to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America — markets with the same mobile-first, community-driven running growth. The product stays the same; the realms, leaderboards and squads become local.

The way Spotify built music from Sweden and Notion built productivity from a tiny team, we're building the gamified fitness OS from India out — with a billion-runner ceiling.

Run with us

We're in closed beta with our founding squad, new cities joining weekly, and iOS + Android public launch expected in the coming months — we'll announce the exact date soon. The waitlist is open to runners anywhere — but it starts here.

The first 9,999 founding runners get early access, early Premium features, and a Founding Runner badge nobody can earn once we launch.

Join the waitlist → — own every street you run.
